If potential problems are thought out in advance, precious time may be saved in the event of an emergency, and much panic and confusion avoided.\nPreventative pre-planning should consist of:\n<ul>\n \t<li>being knowledgeable of on-site resource people,emergency communication equipment, and safety equipment.<\/li>\n \t<li>assessing probable weather conditions and appropriate equipment required to deal with conditions.<\/li>\n \t<li>assessing potential hazards, e.g. lakes, ice, cooking facilities, fires<\/li>\n \t<li>drawing up comprehensive timetables, maps and rules of conduct.<\/li>\n \t<li>ensuring that both parents\/helpers and children are familiar with the above.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Seasonal<\/h4>\nSafety requirements change with the season.\nMany potentially dangerous situations may be avoided by:\n<ul>\n \t<li>ensuring that children are properly dressed.<\/li>\n \t<li>providing proper supervision&#8211;additional parents\/helpers may be needed in winter.<\/li>\n \t<li>preventing overexertion and dehydration, which is a common cause of headache and nausea.<\/li>\n \t<li>being alert to first signs of hypothermia, frostbite and hyperthermia.<\/li>\n \t<li>considering appropriate equipment for the season.<\/li>\n \t<li>checking with McQueen Lake staff regarding ice and snow conditions in winter.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Safety Checklist<\/h4>\n<ul>\n \t<li>At least one vehicle on site for emergencies<\/li>\n \t<li>McQueen Lake phone number posted in school office: <b>000-000-0000<\/b><\/li>\n \t<li>Spare first aid kit. First aid kit located in the caretaker&#8217;s residence, the stretcher is in the pump house (at overnight center).
